Beyond appealing your assessment, Tennessee offers relief programs that can reduce or freeze what qualifying homeowners owe. These are separate from an appeal — you can pursue both.
Tax Relief
The state Property Tax Relief program reimburses a portion of property taxes for qualifying low-income seniors (65+), disabled homeowners, and disabled veterans (and surviving spouses). Eligibility depends on age or disability status, income limits, and the property being your primary residence.
Tax Freeze
The Property Tax Freeze program locks the tax amount on the primary residence of qualifying homeowners 65 and older who meet income limits, so future rate or value increases don't raise that frozen amount.
How to apply
Applications run through the Metro Trustee's office and the county, typically with annual deadlines and proof of age, income, and residency. Amounts and income limits change year to year.
Combine with an appeal
Relief programs reduce what you pay on a given assessment; an appeal reduces the assessment itself. Doing both maximizes your savings.
